Chinese State Media Attacks Donald Trump Over COVID Diagnosis

How low will they go?

As the world learned the news that US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for COVID-19, a number of warm and well-wished messages began to emerge.

That’s because, despite the grand political disparity that American politics seems to rely on to build enthusiasm, (especially in an election year), promoting the ill-health of a world leader is simply in poor taste.

But, of course, some can’t help themselves.   The severe decline in political decorum and human decency that has been on display over the course of the last few years has manifested itself in horrid way on Friday, with the President’s diagnosis bringing out the worst in some people.

Some people included the Chinese government, apparently.

China’s state-controlled media mocked President Trump for testing positive for coronavirus, saying he “paid the price” for downplaying the pandemic and the image of the United States will take a hit as a result.

Trump announced early Friday that both he and first lady Melania Trump tested positive for COVID-19 and will quarantine at the White House, sending shockwaves through the political universe and igniting an outpouring of support for the first family. However, China’s state-affiliated Global Times top editor Hu Hijin didn’t take the high road.

“President Trump and the first lady have paid the price for his gamble to play down the COVID-19. The news shows the severity of the US’ pandemic situation. It will impose a negative impact on the image of Trump and the US, and may also negatively affect his reelection,” Hu tweeted.

China has emerged as one of the greatest threats to the United States as of late, right alongside Russia, the difference between the two being that Vladimir Putin’s anti-American work is done behind a disguise of diplomacy while Beijing is unafraid to put it right out in the open.
