Commander in Chief Says Quarantine of New England Could Be Coming
Is a lockdown on the horizon?
While the novel strain of coronavirus that we are currently at war with is certainly unique in some ways, it’s still a virus, and viruses play by a very specific set of rules. These rules can be exploited by the healthcare industry in order to break the chain, so to speak, and to help authorities predict where trouble will strike next.
These rules form patterns, however, and predictable patterns at that. We know, for instance, that the population density of New York City makes that area far more susceptible to becoming a hotspot for the illness. This has caused New Yorkers to flee to neighboring states in droves, which has, in turn, brought pushback from local authorities at the refugees’ destinations.
President Trump is now considering a possible quarantine to prevent New England from further spreading the virus.
President Trump on Saturday said he is considering imposing an enforceable quarantine on New York, parts of New Jersey and parts of Connecticut as part of the efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
“Some people would like to see New York quarantined because it’s a hotspot — New York, New Jersey, maybe one or two other places, certain parts of Connecticut quarantined,” he said outside the White House.
“I’m thinking about that right now. We might not have to do it but there’s a possibility that sometime today we’ll do a quarantine — short term, two weeks for New York, probably New Jersey and certain parts of Connecticut.”
He said that if such a move happened, it would be primarily a restriction on residents of those states traveling to other parts of the country. He later said that, if enacted, it would not affect truckers or trade.
States such as Florida have already begun to restrict incoming travel, with Governor Ron DeSantis relaying to the public that there is a particular concern regarding those who would be arriving from Louisiana – another hotspot in the COVID-19 pandemic due to the massive gathering that took place in New Orleans for Mardi Gras.
