Elon Musk, an eccentric innovator who has a habit of rubbing people the wrong way, is back in the spotlight again.
No, he’s not puffing away on a blunt with Joe Rogan, nor is he launching a Tesla convertible into space. This time around he’s weighing in on one of the most vitriolic debates in America today.
“FREE AMERICA NOW,” Musk tweeted overnight after sending out news articles about plans to relax social distancing restrictions in various parts of the U.S., the country with the highest number of coronavirus deaths in the world by far.
“Give people their freedom back!” Musk wrote in another tweet that linked to a Wall Street Journal opinion piece by millionaire T.J. Rodgers. The 72-year-old libertarian held up Sweden’s relaxed lockdown rules as a relative success because, “Older people in care homes accounted for half of Sweden’s deaths.”
Musk was soon taking heat for his tweets from one of the nation’s most controversial Congresswomen.
Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Mich., criticized Tesla CEO Elon Musk for calling on the United States to reopen amid coronavirus in a Wednesday morning tweet.
“Billionaires want to continue profiting off your labor even if it means risking millions of lives,” Omar wrote. “They call this ‘freedom.'”
The Twitter beef comes as Americans around the country plan to participate in “MAGA May Day” protests, in which they will demonstrate their opposition to what they view as “draconian” lockdown measures in many major cities.
