There is some vast confusion brewing in the fringes of the 2020 election, and it doesn’t look as though it will be resolved before America heads to the polls in two weeks.
It all began last week when the New York Post published a wild story about a laptop allegedly belonging to Hunter Biden, son of 2020 Democratic nominee Joe Biden. That laptop was purportedly dropped off for repairs at a small computer shop, whose owner believed that he discovered illicit materials on the hard drive. That device was turned over to the FBI, but a copy of the hard drive was given to Rudy Giuliani in order to protect the computer shop owner.
Soon, the contents of the laptop were leaking online and folks like House Rep. Adam Schiff were claiming that the entire thing was nothing more than Russian disinformation.
As it stands today, there are still plenty of doubts circulating about the laptop and the contents within it. In fact, the story was so strange that even Fox News originally passed it up.
Mediaite has learned that Fox News was first approached by Rudy Giuliani to report on a tranche of files alleged to have come from Hunter Biden’s unclaimed laptop left at a Delaware computer repair shop, but that the news division chose not to run the story unless or until the sourcing and veracity of the emails could be properly vetted.
With the general election just three weeks away, Giuliani ultimately brought the story to the New York Post, which shares the same owner, Rupert Murdoch. The tabloid has been exhaustively covering the contents of the laptop — which include everything from emails regarding Hunter Biden’s work for a Ukrainian company to personal photos of the recovering addict — with each morsel being amplified in the conservative media world, including on Fox News’ top-rated opinion programs. Thus far, the Fox’s News division has only been able to verify one email from the tranche leaked.
According to these sources, Giuliani was pushing to have the information publicized before vetting, and that was something that Fox News was unwilling to do.
The metaphorical jury is still out as to what exactly the contents of this laptop represent.
