When you live by the “resistance” sword, there’s a good chance that you may figuratively die by it as well.
This isn’t so much a political concept as it is a way of life. You see, if you stake your entire character on the well-being of others, you lose control of how best to navigate your own path.
Such is the case with Maxine Waters, California House Democrat, who has gone all in when it comes to getting Donald Trump out of office. Famously, Waters even suggested that her constituents should form mobs and confront those who work in harmony with the President, shouting at a crowd to make their fellow Americans “unwelcome”.
Now, in a bit of irony, this promoter of vigilante-harrassment is calling into question the “patriotism” of those who support President Trump in the wake of the Mueller report’s release.
While discussing Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-SC) support for Trump, Water said, “One of the things you have to think about is this; who are the patriots? Who will stand up for America when our obvious enemy is basically hacking into our electoral systems? Who is going to stand up for America and claim to be a patriot when they see that there are many people around this president who have interacted with those from Russia, from the Kremlin, and with Putin? Where are they coming from? And I think when you ask yourself this question, you’d better be concerned about whether or not these are real patriots or whether or not they’re in the pockets of the president of the United States wishing to gain favor from the president and they’re going to stand up for him no matter what.”
President Trump has contended that the release of the Mueller report has again “exonerated” him, and he has been taking a bit of a metaphorical “victory lap” as of late.
Given that Waters has so intrinsically and intimately latched her legacy onto that of the President’s, this good news about our nation having not been compromised by a Russian asset is somehow disappointing for her and her base. In order to remain at the forefront of the progressive news cycle, Waters must constantly pivot to the President’s reality, and not that of her constituents…and that is just bad legislating.
