New Zealand’s Knee Jerk Reaction to Mosque Shooter Mustn’t Be Repeated

A terrible and hateful crime that occurred in New Zealand last week has sent reverberations around the planet, particularly here in America.

Make no mistake about it; that was entirely on purpose.

For those who saw the “manifesto” left behind by the New Zealand mosque shooter before it was stricken from the mainstream internet, the media’s coverage of the shooting has been lacking a sense of reality.

The shooter was certainly an evil person; not only a murderer but an avowed white supremacist as well.

A conservative he was not, and he said so in the now-scarce manifesto.

What’s even more worrisome, however, is that the shooter willingly admitted that his choice to use firearms was not for the ease of it, but for the impact that such an attack would have on politics…specifically in America.

Straight from the shooter’s own twisted mind:

New Zealand

While the US has done well to avoid a sudden reaction to the shooter’s actions, New Zealanders have not been that lucky.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand on Thursday announced a national ban on all military-style semiautomatic weapons, all high-capacity ammunition magazines and all parts that allow weapons to be modified into the kinds of guns used to kill 50 people at two mosques in Christchurch last week.

“What we’re banning today are the things used in last Friday’s attack,” she said, adding: “It’s about all of us, it’s in the national interest and it’s about safety.”

Now for the most concerning piece of the announcement…

“Today, I’m announcing New Zealand will ban all military-style semiautomatic weapons,” Ms. Ardern said in outlining the changes. “We will also ban all assault rifles. We will ban all high-capacity magazines. We will ban all parts with the ability to convert semiautomatic or any other type of firearm into a military-style semiautomatic weapon.”

“We will ban parts that cause a firearm to generate semiautomatic, automatic or close-to-automatic gunfire,” she added. “In short, every semiautomatic weapon used in the terror attack on Friday will be banned in this country.”

Law abiding New Zealanders will now be far more vulnerable than in years past – a reality that is certainly not being overlooked by criminals and would-be tyrants in the region.
