As the world continues to grapple with the threat of COVID-19, some of the globe’s bad actors seem to think that this is an appropriate time to take advantage of America.
President Trump would like to remind these ne’er-d0-wells to think again, and he’s taking his tough talk directly to the enemy.
President Donald Trump has ordered the US Navy to “shoot down and destroy” Iranian gunboats, should they harass American vessels at sea. His declaration comes after a confrontation in the Persian Gulf.
“I have instructed the United States Navy to shoot down and destroy any and all Iranian gunboats if they harass our ships at sea,” the president tweeted on Wednesday morning.
A week earlier, the US Navy accused the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) of “dangerous and provocative” actions, claiming that nearly a dozen Iranian vessels buzzed a group of American ships in the Persian Gulf. The US Fifth Fleet later published video footage of the encounter, which showed the gunboats circling a larger US ship.
Iran’s behavior was becoming problematic even before the global pandemic began in earnest, with the revolutionary guard repeatedly attacking oil tankers and the infrastructure surrounding the petrol industry within the Middle East.
These antics seemingly culminated in the assassination of a high ranking Iranian general during a US drone strike. Iran retaliated by launching approximately 15 ballistic missiles in the direction of sleeping US troops stationed in Iraq. During this melee, Iran “unintentionally” downed a Ukrainian passenger plane, killing all who were on board.
