VIDEO: Police Officer Hit by Truck During Violent Protests in Philadelphia

The violence soon spiraled out of control.

The city of Philadelphia erupted on Monday night, with protesters taking to the streets to demonstrate against yet another police shooting of a young black man.

In this instance, the deceased was wielding a knife and approaching officers erratically.  Those with knowledge of the situation have stated that the man was having a mental health episode when police opened fire, firing 14 rounds in the altercation.

As has occurred so often in recent months, the shooting sparked massive and angsty protests in downtown Philadelphia, with some pockets of violence spiraling out of control.

Protesters gathered outside a Philadelphia police precinct Monday night hours after police shot and killed a man waving a knife in the afternoon, CBS Philly reports. The victim was identified as 27-year old Walter Wallace Jr.

Tensions rose as the night wore on.

Early Tuesday, a pickup truck driving at a relatively fast clip hit an officer. Video shows a man standing through the roof of the truck’s cab. A bystander can be heard saying, “Oh my god. He hit a cop.”

Philadelphia Police Sergeant Eric Gripp said the officer, a 56-year-old female, was hospitalized in stable condition with a broken leg and other injuries. The pickup was found nearby, unoccupied, he added.

Video footage of this incident was soon circulating on social media, but we must warn you that the tweet below depicts a disturbing scene.

Other footage from Monday night showed police lines retreating as protesters attacked, launching a hail of debris skyward before closing in.
